Memorable Memorial Day
My friend and I had a blast this weekend! For the first time since moving here in 2005, I was a tourist in my own city. We did everything! We went up to the observation deck of the Tower of Americas, a ghost hunt near the Alamo (it was good but the New Orleans tour was a tad better 🙂 lol), Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Riverwalk boat tour, Rivercenter Mall, the Alamo, the Rainforest Cafe, drinkin’ with friends…the whole shebang!
The Emily Morgan Hotel
The two main historical points from the ghost tour were of course the two oldest hotels by the Alamo; The Emily Morgan Hotel and The Menger Hotel. A woman by the name of Sallie White haunts the Menger. She was a chambermaid there in in the 1870’s. She had a fight with her husband and he brutally attacked her while at the hotel. She died from her injuries two days later. Her ghost is seen quite often in the old Victorian part of the hotel (before additions were added in the early 1900’s). She is seen in a long gray skirt and bandana around her forehead carrying clean towels for guests.
The Menger Hotel
The bar of the Menger is also where President Roosevelt gathered his “Rough Riders”. He found a bunch of guys in the bar of the hotel and offered to buy them some drinks. Once everyone was good and drunk, he slid a piece of paper in front and said “sign here”. The next day all these men woke up and found themselves on their way to boot camp. Nice right?
The Emily Morgan Hotel used to be the Nix Medical Arts Hospital and is where the wounded soldiers were kept during the Battle of the Alamo. The ghost of Emily Morgan (AKA Emily D. West) is seen in the lobby and halls of the hotel frequently. She was a melato girl in her twenties who basically served as a prostitute for the Mexican-American soldiers who fought at the Alamo.
